ENT Regular Program - AoM 2013 Print E-mail
Wednesday, 01 May 2013 03:36

By Harry Sapienza

The Entrepreneurship Division will once again have an extremely exciting set of papers during the regular program at Lake Buena Vista on Monday and Tuesday, August 12 and 13. We had 673 finalized submissions for the regular program this year: 625 papers submitted and 23 symposia (as well as 25 PDW workshops sent in for the pre-conference program). A total of 732 reviewers provided multiple reviews of the submissions, resulting in 1,849 total reviews. The Division is deeply grateful for all of the work of its members in submitting, reviewing and commenting on submissions. This is an enormous task, carried out in a very short period of time, and one with few rewards or thanks directly coming to those who have reviewed. Authors have been generally very complimentary in commenting on the efforts made by their reviewers, and we do urge you now and in the future to provide constructive comments and feedback for your reviewers.

Paper submissions and sessions: By Academy rules, we were allowed to accept 293 of the 625 paper submissions. The top rated 264 papers are to be presented on Monday and Tuesday in 66 separate sessions with four papers per session. The remaining 29 accepted papers will be presented as “discussion papers” in seven sessions on Sunday. This year, the Academy has decided to have these discussion papers in place of roundtable “discussion” sessions. We did our best to group papers into like topics, with some adjustments to avoid authors being in assigned in two sessions at one time.

2013 Division and Interest Group Elections Print E-mail
Wednesday, 01 May 2013 03:34

Just a friendly nudge to encourage you to participate in the 2013 Division and Interest Group elections.

The election site has been open for a couple of weeks now. We are seeing a steady increase in the number of members casting votes but we are still well below historic levels, where ENT traditionally does better than other Divisions in election participation and member satisfaction with how elections have been run by the Division. The Nomination Committee has - with input from members - worked hard to keep up the latter - now it's up to you members to make sure participation beats historical heights (and other Divisions!).

This year we elect a) PDW Chair (who will also proceed into the 5-year leadership cycle), and b) 3 Representatives-at-Large.

To convince you to vote, please consider that:

- It is important that elected officers represent the preferences of our members
- It is important that elected officers feel they have a mandate from the membership
- It is simply the right thing to do

And if you’re still not convinced:
- voting makes a great break from grading papers….

- when you have cast your vote, the clever AoM software makes sure you will not receive any further reminders about this election...

So please vote NOW to help select the future leaders of your Division or Interest Group. Please visit http://apps.aomonline.org/DivElection to cast your vote today.

The election website provides a secure, simple way to vote. The ENT elections close by May 16, so please vote today!

Thank you,

Mike Wright
On behalf of the ENT Division Nominating Committee

The Academy of Management Entrepreneurship Division and McGraw-Hill

Present the

Innovation in Entrepreneurship Pedagogy Award

by Linda Edelman

The Academy of Management Entrepreneurship Division and McGraw Hill present an annual award ($1500) to the person(s) who develops and implements an innovation in entrepreneurship pedagogy for either graduate or undergraduate education. The innovation must be a full course that is focused on entrepreneurship. Although innovations in a program of courses or in individual exercises are certainly valuable, they will not be considered for this award.

The purpose of the award is to encourage not only innovations in pedagogy but also the dissemination of such innovations. Criteria for evaluation of nominations include (1) the novelty / innovativeness of the pedagogy, (2) transferability to other schools or professors and (3) support for the nomination from students, alumni, colleagues, administrators, the community, etc.

Self-nominated proposals are encouraged!  Nominations should include the following materials:

Message from the Outgoing Chair of the Communications Committee Print E-mail
Wednesday, 01 May 2013 02:23

DawnDeTienneby Dawn DeTienne

As I look back on my three years as Chair of the Communications Committee, I think we did some good things, learned a lot, and had fun! Which as I reflect on it, these three criteria (good work, learning, fun) probably guide much of what I choose to do. So thank you to all of you who make this three years rewarding. I especially want to thank Jason for all of his patience in working with me as our Webmaster and Fedor for his willingness to take over the Chair position. Communications will continue to be a critical dimension of the division and one in which I believe we can positively impact our members.

ENT Member Interview: Norris Krueger Print E-mail

Q1. Background

You mean, “What made me go down this crazy academic road?”

In hindsight, so much of my path seems both a function of following the Next Logical Step and a function of serendipity. So many pieces of the puzzle crept in before I even knew it. My first entrepreneurial experience happened before I could spell it. But it led me to a fateful interview with the new chaired professor of entrepreneurship at Ohio State, Al Shapero. Always nice to meet rock stars, especially those who saw great potential.

I have never seen myself as particularly adept at identifying and acting on opportunities, so I’ve always been fascinated by people who were healthy optimists and by people who create value for others. My Dad was in sales, and he always stressed that the value proposition is never for us, it’s for the customer. That helped internalize that it’s not just social ventures that do that, it’s that any good entrepreneur is about creating value for others. There are so many other lessons that I now recognize as helping me “get” the expert entrepreneurial mindset.

Another formative experience came “in exile” in Montana. I met an expert on early childhood education who turned me on to all the amazing work being done in educational psychology, especially developmental and cognitive developmental psychology. Why does our best pedagogy do so well? There are very good reasons. That knowledge raises the bar for all of us, but it helped drive my entrepreneurship curiosity increasingly deeper into cognitive science.
